Thailand's DTV visa run is over

The Destination Thailand Visa was the one you could get from wherever you already were. A bus to Vientiane, a form, a week. From 31 August 2026 the door you may knock on is decided by your passport or your residence card, not by your itinerary.

What changed

Two things, and they arrived together.

You apply where you belong, not where you are. The Royal Thai Embassy in London put it in writing on 8 September, effective 31 August 2026, at 00:00 hrs. (Thailand local time): a DTV applicant there must show proof of permanent residence in the UK, Ireland or a British Overseas Territory - indefinite leave to remain, Irish long-term residency - where the old requirement was evidence of your current location. The announcement is on the embassy’s own site: Adjustment of Supporting Documents for Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) Applications.

And you bring a police certificate. A certificate of criminal record clearance is now a required document rather than an optional one.

The pairing is what makes the practice impossible. “Evidence of current location” was a hotel booking. “Proof of permanent residence” is a document a country issues to its own residents, and nobody on a 30-day stamp in Laos has one.

It is not one announcement, it is sixty

There is no single MFA notice to link, which is why this took a fortnight to become visible. Each mission is publishing its own, in its own words, with its own paperwork:

• London wants an ACRO or Irish police certificate, issued within 6 months of submission.
• Los Angeles wants an FBI certificate, issued within 3 months. Its page was last updated 1 September 2026.
• Munich asks for clearance from the country of nationality or the country you are applying in, not older than 3 months.
• Ho Chi Minh City asks for Criminal Record Certificate No. 2 from your country of nationality or from Vietnam, and for a Vietnamese ID card or a residence card as proof you live there.

Same rule, four different documents and two different expiry windows. Read the page of the mission that covers you before you buy anything - a certificate that is five months old clears London and is two months dead in Los Angeles.

We checked Vientiane and Washington DC as well. Neither had published a notice at the time of writing. That is not an exemption, and treating it as one is how somebody pays a fee twice: the rule has an effective date, and a mission that has not written it down yet is a mission that has not written it down yet.

Why this is a bigger deal than a document list

Because it moves the DTV from one category of visa into another, and the two are not comparable.

Most nomad visas have an income bar. The DTV never did - it asks for a bank balance and nothing else, which is what the Thailand page shows and why it turns up so high on the no income requirement list. What it had instead of an income test was a location test, and that test was so weak it was a formality. You could be anyone, anywhere, as long as you could be somewhere with a Thai consulate for a week.

Now the test has teeth, and it is a test some people simply cannot pass. If you have been living out of the region for years without holding residence anywhere - which describes a great many people the DTV was written for - there may be no mission with jurisdiction over you but the one in the country on your passport, and you have to satisfy it from there.

This is the question the site calls where you apply from, and it is separate from what the portal is. Thailand’s DTV is still filed entirely online through thaievisa.go.th; you never stand in a queue. What changed is not where your body has to be. It is which door you are allowed to knock on, and that is now answered by your nationality or your residence card. The Thailand row records that, with the announcement above as its basis, as of today.

If you were counting on the old way

• Applied and paid before 31 August 2026? You are under the old criteria. Applied after, or applied before and paid after, you are not.
• Holding a DTV already? Nothing here touches it. It is five years, 180 days an entry, and the extension is an immigration matter inside Thailand, not a consular one.
• Looking for somewhere else in the region with no income figure? The no income requirement list is the short answer, and it is short. Most of Southeast Asia’s alternatives do set a figure - Indonesia and Malaysia both do.

Thailand has not raised a threshold or closed a programme. It has stopped letting the cheapest plane ticket decide which government checks you out. If the mission covering your country has not published its version yet, tell us when it does.
