Thailand ends the 60-day visa exemption

News· · by NomadYou News

A law-firm headline says Thailand's digital nomad visa matters more because short stays got harder. The official change is narrower: the Cabinet revoked the 60-day visa exemption. The Destination Thailand Visa was not rewritten by that notice.

What the government published

The Government Public Relations Department summarised a Consular Affairs notice on 4 September 2026: Revision of Thailand’s Visa Exemption and Visa on Arrival Schemes.

It says the Cabinet approved the review on 19 May 2026, the measures were published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026, and they take effect from 15 September 2026. The listed changes are about tourism entry, not the Destination Thailand Visa:

  1. One visa-exemption scheme per country or territory.
  2. Revoking the 60-day visa exemption scheme.
  3. Revising the 30-day tourism exemption and expanding it to 60 countries or territories.
  4. A new 15-day tourism exemption for two countries or territories.
  5. Cutting Visa on Arrival eligibility to three countries or territories.

People already in Thailand on an exemption stamp, or arriving before 15 September 2026, may stay until the date on that stamp. The notice is explicit that this review covers only the tourism exemption and VoA schemes and does not affect other visa categories at this point.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Washington’s visa types, fees and validity page still points applicants at thaievisa.go.th. It does not itself announce the exemption cut; the PRD note above is the public English summary of the gazette measures.

What this is not

It is not a rewrite of the Destination Thailand Visa.

The DTV remains a separate, live programme. Washington’s DTV page (updated 10 September 2026) still names workcation for digital nomads, remote workers, foreign talent and freelancers; still sets no monthly income figure; and still asks for bank statements for the last three months ending at no less than 500,000 THB each month. Validity is still five years at a 400 USD fee on that page. Mission paperwork and which post you may use are a different story — covered in Thailand’s DTV visa run is over and Washington’s residence and FBI list.

Secondary pieces that frame the exemption cut as a DTV “launch” or a new income rule are overselling. The gazette measures tighten the tourism stamp. They do not invent a DTV threshold.

What a remote worker should take from it

If you were chaining 60-day visa-free entries as a stand-in for a longer stay, that route is the one the gazette closed. From 15 September 2026 the tourism exemption the notice describes is the shorter scheme.

If you need a named multi-entry stay for remote work, the DTV is open and you apply outside Thailand through the mission that covers your nationality or proven residence, on the e-Visa portal. The Thailand page still records no income minimum and the THB 500,000 balance test — not a figure invented for this post.

We will update when Consular Affairs publishes a fuller nationality list or when a mission page ties the exemption change to DTV documents. If you see either first, tell us.

The row behind this

Every figure this post relies on lives on a country page with its source and its confidence grade beside it. That is where it gets corrected, and where it stays current after the post stops being news.
