Taiwan's nomad visa is open. Stay length is not on BOCA
Condé Nast Traveler called Taiwan's digital nomad visa a newly launched two-year programme. The Bureau of Consular Affairs page that takes the applications has been up since 2 January 2025. You can apply today. That page still does not say how long the visa lasts.
What BOCA publishes
The Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, keeps one English page for this status: Digital nomad visitor visa. The page was created on 2 January 2025 and was last updated on 7 August 2026. Under BOCA’s visitor-visa list it sits as entry 18, dated the same January day.
This is not an announcement of a visa to come. The page names the form, the documents, where to hand the file in, and that the National Development Council reviews qualifications. Missions and BOCA offices already process it. The Taiwan page marks the programme active.
Who the page says may apply
Only nationals of visa-exempt countries. The eligibility line links BOCA’s own visa-exempt list. That list moves; the digital nomad page does not freeze a nationality table of its own.
You also need proof of remote work: a résumé or portfolio, a current employment or freelance contract, and the Description of Intended Activities form BOCA attaches to the page. Business owners as a separate category are not named.
Then one of three money-or-track tests:
- a digital nomad visa already issued by another country; or
- age 30 or over: annual salary of at least US$40,000 (or equivalent) in one of the last two years; or
- age 20 to 29: annual salary of at least US$20,000 (or equivalent) in one of the last two years.
Salary proof is a tax certificate (the page names examples such as a US W-2 or a UK P60) or a salary certificate from the employer.
Separately, a bank balance averaging at least US$10,000 (or equivalent) each month over the last six months, and international health insurance covering the stay named on the activities form. Passport photos, a form from visawebapp.boca.gov.tw, and a passport valid at least six months with blank pages.
Those dollar figures are BOCA’s own. It gives no other currency, so neither do we here. The Taiwan page converts them into yours.
How you apply
Outside Taiwan: at a Taiwan overseas mission. The mission sends the file to the National Development Council for a qualifications review, then finishes the visa review itself.
Already in Taiwan on visa exemption or on a non-extendable visitor visa for another purpose: at BOCA or a MOFA regional office, 10 working days before the current stay expires. Fail the application and you still have to leave before that stay runs out. An interview may be required.
The form is filled online and printed; the finished application is not lodged through a fully online portal.
What the page does not say
Condé Nast Traveler’s piece, dated 9 July 2026 and recirculating on 30 September 2026, calls this a “just launched” two-year visa: six months first, then three further half-year extensions. BOCA’s requirements page prints none of that — no initial length, no extension count, no two-year total. Insurance must cover “the entire duration of stay” as you write it on the activities form; that is not the same as BOCA publishing a programme length.
“Just launched” is wrong on the calendar either way. The page that takes the applications has been live since January 2025.
If a mission is applying a six-month-plus-extensions clock that BOCA has not put on this page, that is still the mission’s practice until the bureau writes it down. We will add a stay length to the country page when BOCA does. If you see one on an official notice we have missed, tell us.
Everything above is taken from BOCA’s Digital nomad visitor visa page, checked on 30 September 2026.
The row behind this
Every figure this post relies on lives on a country page with its source and its confidence grade beside it. That is where it gets corrected, and where it stays current after the post stops being news.
