Slovenia's nomad permit is open. You can apply
Nomads Embassy recirculated a 'Slovenia Digital Nomad Visa: How to Apply' guide. That is not a launch notice from this week. The Ministry of the Interior already said the temporary residence permit for digital nomads was introduced on 21 November 2025, and it publishes where to file.
What Interior publishes
Slovenia’s Ministry of the Interior keeps one English notice for this status:
Temporary residence permit for digital nomads
on gov.si, dated 21 November 2025. The opening line is that Slovenia is
introducing the permit on that day. The Slovenia page
already marks the programme active.
The legal insert sits in the Foreigners Act. Official Gazette Uradni list RS, št. 32/2025 (6 May 2025) promulgates the ZTuj-2I amendment and adds Article 51.a — dovoljenje za začasno prebivanje za digitalnega nomada. That is the statute. The ministry English page is the readable summary of who qualifies, the money test, the duration and where to apply.
This is not an announcement of a visa to come. It is Interior’s own instructions for a permit that already exists.
Who the page says may apply
A digital nomad, in the ministry’s wording, is a foreigner who is not a citizen of an EU or EEA country and who is either employed or works under a civil-law contract for a business entity based outside Slovenia, or works as a self-employed person abroad, with all such work carried out remotely via information and communication technologies. The essential point on that page is that the foreigner is not entering the Slovenian labour market, so the usual Employment Service admission permit does not apply.
The money test Interior prints
Sufficient means of subsistence means monthly funds of at least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia, calculated from the average monthly gross salary most recently published in the Official Gazette. Proof may come from any lawful sources of income, as for other categories of foreigners.
That is a formula, not a fixed euro figure on the page. The statistics office figure moves, so the threshold moves with it — the same mechanism the income-bar post walks through for Slovenia and fourteen other live programmes. This post does not invent a converted amount. The Slovenia page carries the current reading and grades how it was obtained.
How long it lasts, and the gap
A temporary residence permit for digital nomads may be issued for up to one year and cannot be extended. A foreigner may reapply only six months after the previous permit expires. During the permit’s validity, they may apply for another type of temporary residence on a different purpose of stay if they want to keep living in Slovenia on other grounds.
That clock is why the Slovenia page grades the permanent-residence pathway No: a non-extendable year with a forced gap cannot carry the ordinary five-year continuity on this permit alone.
Family, and where you file
Interior calls out a more favourable family-reunification regime: digital nomads may reunite with family members immediately, without waiting on how long the foreigner has already resided or how long the permit itself runs.
Applications go to any diplomatic representation or consular post of the Republic of Slovenia abroad. Anyone already legally residing in Slovenia may also file at any administrative unit in the country. The ministry page publishes no document checklist and no fee; the Slovenia page records that finding rather than inventing a list.
“How to apply” on the calendar
The Nomads Embassy how-to guide recirculating into feeds on 14 October 2026 frames Slovenia as a live application walkthrough. Interior’s 21 November 2025 notice already prints the definition, the twice-average means test, the twelve-month non-extendable term, the six-month wait before reapplying, the immediate family rule and the mission-or-administrative-unit filing routes. The novelty is in the secondary headline, not in whether you can apply.
If a mission or administrative unit is applying a different means reading than the ministry page prints, that is still their practice until Interior rewrites the sheet. If you see an official notice we have missed, tell us.
Everything above is taken from the Ministry of the Interior’s Temporary residence permit for digital nomads page and the Official Gazette text of ZTuj-2I Art. 51.a, checked on 14 October 2026. Nomads Embassy is cited only as the secondary guide that recirculated.
The row behind this
Every figure this post relies on lives on a country page with its source and its confidence grade beside it. That is where it gets corrected, and where it stays current after the post stops being news.
