Moldova's nomad visa is open. You can apply
Fragomen recirculated a 'Moldova: Digital Nomad Visa Introduced' alert. That is not a launch notice from this week. The General Inspectorate for Migration already said digital nomads can hold temporary residence from 20 September 2025, and it publishes the document lists.
What Migration publishes
The General Inspectorate for Migration (Inspectoratul General pentru Migrație), under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, keeps an English notice that the category is live: A new category of foreigners can benefit from the right of residence in the Republic of Moldova. It says that from 20 September 2025 foreigners classed as digital nomads can benefit from the right of residence.
The same inspectorate publishes the application form and document lists under temporary residence for digital nomadism: Application for granting/extension of the right of residence for the purpose of digital nomadism, as well as the list of documents. That is an open file path, not a promise that a portal will appear later.
The brief pointed at bma.gov.md — the Bureau of Migration and Asylum host still cited on the Moldova page. That host timed out from here on 9 October 2026, so this post follows the inspectorate pages that did load. The Moldova page already marks the programme active.
Law 144 of 19 June 2025 (support for the digital economy and electronic services) is what put digital-nomad status into the foreigners regime. The president’s promulgation decree for that law sits on the state legislation portal: Decree DP250/2025.
Who the inspectorate says may apply
The notice defines a digital nomad as someone who works remotely — it names fields such as IT, marketing, design, consulting, or online education — under an individual employment contract or a service contract with a legal entity, or as a partner of a company, registered outside the Republic of Moldova.
The document lists split that into two tracks:
- employment or service contract with a foreign legal entity (contract copy, legalised/apostilled and translated into Romanian, plus a sworn remote-work statement);
- associate / partner of a foreign legal entity (recent authority extract confirming partner status and that the company is not insolvent or in liquidation).
Both tracks ask for accommodation proof in Moldova, health insurance valid there, a criminal-record certificate (or equivalent) for a first grant, and a bank statement for the income test below. Local Moldovan employment is not what this category is for; Fragomen’s secondary alert says local work is not allowed under the visa, which matches the foreign-employer framing on the inspectorate pages.
The money test the document list prints
The inspectorate’s own wording, repeated on the granting and extension lists: a bank statement in Romanian or English confirming monthly income amounting to at least 18 times the average salary forecast for the current year in the Republic of Moldova (three salaries per month), for the last 6 months before the application date.
That is a formula, not a fixed dollar or euro figure on the page. The forecast wage moves by government decision, so the threshold moves with it. This post does not invent a converted amount. The Moldova page carries the current reading and grades how it was obtained.
How long, and where the file goes
Invest Moldova’s official FAQ on the same status — Digital Nomads — says the temporary residence permit is granted for the requested period but may not exceed two years, and may be extended on the same conditions. That matches Fragomen’s two-year-plus-renewal shape. The inspectorate document page itself is a checklist, not a duration sheet.
Applications go to the General Inspectorate for Migration — in person or through an authorised representative on Invest Moldova’s steps, or completed at the One-Stop Shop on the document lists. Fragomen’s 26 September 2025 alert also names online filing and a processing window; treat those operational details as secondary until the live host that takes the click confirms them. The inspectorate page is enough to say the category is open, not merely announced.
“Introduced” on the calendar
Fragomen’s Moldova: Digital Nomad Visa Introduced piece (dated 26 September 2025, recirculating into feeds on 9 October 2026) correctly names the 20 September 2025 start, the foreign-employer / shareholder eligibility, and the two-year shape. The novelty is in the headline a year later, not in whether you can apply. Migration’s English notice and document lists already treat digital-nomad temporary residence as a live category.
If you see an official notice we have missed — especially a working English apply path on bma.gov.md or igm.gov.md — tell us.
Everything above is taken from the General Inspectorate for Migration notice and document lists, checked on 9 October 2026, with Invest Moldova’s FAQ used for the two-year ceiling and Fragomen cited only as the secondary alert that recirculated.
The row behind this
Every figure this post relies on lives on a country page with its source and its confidence grade beside it. That is where it gets corrected, and where it stays current after the post stops being news.
