Sri Lanka's nomad visa is open. Not just launched
Condé Nast Traveler called Sri Lanka's digital nomad visa a newly launched programme for remote workers earning at least $2,000 a month. The Department of Immigration and Emigration's own category PDF already sets that bar, the fee and where you hand the file in. You can apply. It is not a launch from this week.
What Immigration publishes
The Department of Immigration and Emigration keeps a two-page English PDF for this
status: Digital Nomad Visa Category.
On the department’s own server the file’s Last-Modified header is 14 January 2026.
That is the document NomadYou already cites on the Sri Lanka page,
which marks the programme active.
This is not an announcement of a visa to come. The PDF names who may apply, the money test, the document list, the fee, the stay length and the office that takes the file. Endorsement goes on the passport after the Residence Visa Division evaluates it.
Who the PDF says may apply
Foreign nationals aged 18 or older, plus a spouse and dependants of the main applicant.
The main applicant must be in remote employment, freelancing, or own a business not registered in Sri Lanka that serves clients outside Sri Lanka. Local employment inside Sri Lanka is forbidden; all income must be foreign-sourced.
Then the money line, in the PDF’s own wording: a minimum monthly income remittance of USD 2,000 for the main applicant. If the dependant count rises above two, an extra USD 500 a month must be remitted for each additional dependant. Those dollar figures are the department’s. It gives no other currency, so neither do we here. The Sri Lanka page converts them into yours.
How you apply
In person, not through an online portal. Step 1 on the PDF is submission of the required documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration – Residence Visa Division. Step 2 is evaluation. Step 3 is approval and visa endorsement on the passport.
The document list is the PDF’s own, spelling included:
- a duly filled visa application form and a request letter from the applicant;
- a passport photocopy valid at least six months, and two recent passport-sized photographs;
- marriage and birth certificates where a spouse or dependants are coming;
- a duly filled security clearance form, a medical clearance report, and a police clearance certificate from the home country or country of residence (not older than three months);
- international health insurance covering medical care in Sri Lanka;
- a recommendation from the Ministry of Digital Economy;
- proof of the minimum monthly remittance for the main applicant and the dependants.
Renewal asks for the same first-issuance set plus proof of tax registration with the Inland Revenue Department.
Duration, fee, and what it does not do
The stay is one year, renewable annually. The fee is USD 500 per year for the main applicant, the same again for a spouse, and the same again for each dependant.
Holders may open personal bank accounts, enter rental or lease agreements, enrol dependent children in international or private schools, and use telecommunications and co-working spaces. The PDF is silent on permanent residence. The Sri Lanka page grades the permanent residence pathway No: other PR routes exist in the country, but none are tied to this visa.
“Just launched” on the calendar
Condé Nast Traveler’s piece, recirculating on 2 October 2026, frames this as Sri Lanka having just launched a visa for remote workers at $2,000 a month. The immigration PDF that sets those rules has been sitting on immigration.gov.lk since at least mid-January. The income figure in the headline is the one the department prints; the novelty claim is not.
If a mission or the Residence Visa Division is applying a different remittance reading than the PDF’s wording, that is still their practice until the department rewrites the sheet. If you see an official notice we have missed, tell us.
Everything above is taken from the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s Digital Nomad Visa Category PDF, checked on 2 October 2026.
The row behind this
Every figure this post relies on lives on a country page with its source and its confidence grade beside it. That is where it gets corrected, and where it stays current after the post stops being news.
