Spain's nomad visa is open. The Guardian said 'plans'
The Guardian recirculated a 'Spain plans digital nomad visa scheme' piece dated 25 September 2022. That is not a launch notice from this week. The Consulate in Washington already takes telework (digital nomad) visa files, and the page prints who may apply and the 2026 means test.
What the Guardian printed
On 25 September 2022 The Guardian ran Spain plans ‘digital nomad’ visa scheme to attract remote workers. The piece said the law had yet to be passed, guessed a stay of one year renewable toward five, and floated a minimum of about €2,000 a month as something people then thought Spain would set. The page still carries that 2022 dateline; the RSS hit is the same article recirculating.
That wording is an announcement of a scheme to come. It is not a description of the route that exists now.
What the consulate publishes today
Spain’s digital nomad (telework) visa is open. The foreign ministry’s own Washington sheet — Telework (Digital nomad) Visa — is the page that takes the file for that district. It says the visa is for foreigners who will live in Spain while working remotely for companies outside Spain, using computer and telecommunications systems. Self-employed applicants may also work for a Spanish company, up to 20% of their professional activity. EU citizens are outside this route.
You need an N.I.E. before you apply. From 1 September 2026, Washington hands the file in person at BLS by appointment only — covered separately in Spain’s telework visa — Washington goes through BLS. The Spain page already marks the programme active.
The income figure, as that page gives it
The Guardian’s 2022 guess of about €2,000 is not the rule on the consular sheet. Washington ties the bar to Spain’s minimum wage (SMI), which it gives as €1,221 for 2026:
- applicant alone: 200% of the monthly SMI — €2,442 a month (the page writes “approx. $ 2900”; that is the consulate’s conversion, not a separate dollar threshold)
- first family member: add 75% — €916
- each further family member: add 25% — €306
We do not invent a figure the page does not print. The graded conversion — and the known disagreement between consular and in-Spain readings of the same 200% rule — sits on the Spain page.
Open, not planned
Nothing on the Washington sheet is an announcement of a programme still waiting for a law. The page lists documents, fees, the BLS address, and a 10-day legal decision period once the Consular Section has the file. The visa itself runs at most one year; foreigners already legally in Spain can apply for a telework residence permit of up to three years to the Ministry of Inclusion’s Large Companies unit (UGE-CE) without a prior telework visa.
If you are applying from India rather than the Washington district, that is a different pair of mission sheets: Spain’s digital nomad visa is open. India can apply.
If Washington rewrites the SMI line or the BLS note, tell us.
Everything above is taken from The Guardian’s 25 September 2022 article and the Consular Section of the Embassy of Spain in Washington’s Telework (Digital nomad) Visa page, checked on 28 October 2026.
The row behind this
