South Africa's remote work visa is open. You can apply
Fragomen recirculated a 'South Africa: Digital Nomad Visa Implemented, Further Details Forthcoming' alert dated 11 October 2024. That is not a launch notice from this week. Home Affairs already publishes the Remote Work Visitor's Visa requirements PDF, effective 9 October 2024, with the income bar and the document list.
What Home Affairs publishes
The Department of Home Affairs keeps a two-page requirements sheet for the category it actually names — a Remote Work Visitor’s Visa under Immigration Act section 11(1)(b)(iv), not a freestanding “digital nomad visa” product:
Visitors visa section 11(1)(b)(iv) for prescribed activity of remote work
The PDF is marked effective 9 October 2024. The heading itself sets the stay band: exceeding 3 months to 3 years. That is an open checklist, not a promise that a gazette or a portal will appear later.
On the same day, Home Affairs also put out a media statement on gov.za — Minister Leon Schreiber on cutting-edge visa reform — announcing the gazetting of the Remote Work Visitor Visa and saying applicants may submit through the relevant service providers and South African missions abroad while online adjudication is built. The South Africa page already marks the programme active.
Who the checklist asks for
The PDF’s own framing: a foreigner who must stay in the Republic to conduct work for a foreign employer under a contract that partially requires certain activities in South Africa. The document list then asks for:
- a duly completed and signed application form;
- a statement or documentation explaining the purpose and duration of the visit;
- a valid return air ticket or proof of reservation;
- proof of sufficient financial means (see below);
- a passport that expires no less than 30 days after the intended departure date;
- a yellow fever certificate where the endemic-area rule applies;
- a valid contract of employment signed by both the applicant and the foreign-based employer;
- proof of payment of the applicable fee.
The sheet does not offer a freelancer or business-owner track. Fragomen’s secondary alert says freelancers may qualify; that claim is not on the Home Affairs checklist this post follows. The holder is not entitled to take up employment in South Africa, and may not apply for a change of status while in the Republic except under the exceptional circumstances already prescribed for visitor visas.
The money test the PDF prints
Home Affairs’s own wording: proof of sufficient financial means, defined as a gross salary of no less than the equivalent of R650,796.00 per annum, shown as three months’ bank statements.
That is a fixed rand floor on the ministry sheet, not a formula and not a dollar figure this post invents. The South Africa page carries the dataset’s converted reading and grades how it was obtained. The PDF names an “applicable fee” and does not print the amount.
Tax notes on the same sheet
Two SARS registration notes sit under the document list:
- if the holder is tax-resident in a country with which South Africa has a double-taxation agreement in force under section 108(2) of the Income Tax Act, 1962, they must register with SARS if present in the Republic for longer than an aggregate of 183 days during any 12-month period;
- if they are not tax-resident in such a country, they must register with SARS.
Fragomen’s alert instead summarised a “more than six months within a 36-month period” test. Prefer the PDF’s wording over that paraphrase.
“Implemented” on the calendar
Fragomen’s South Africa: Digital Nomad Visa Implemented, Further Details Forthcoming piece is dated 11 October 2024 — the day after the DHA sheet’s effective date — and its own update line already says Home Affairs had published the documentary requirements. The “further details forthcoming” framing belonged to that week two years ago. The novelty now is the headline recirculating into feeds on 27 October 2026, not whether a remote-work visitor file can be opened.
If you see a newer official notice we have missed — especially a Home Affairs page that adds a freelancer track or prints the fee in rand — tell us.
Everything above is taken from the Department of Home Affairs Remote Work Visitor’s Visa requirements PDF and the 9 October 2024 gov.za media statement, checked on 27 October 2026, with Fragomen cited only as the secondary alert that recirculated.
The row behind this
Every figure this post relies on lives on a country page with its source and its confidence grade beside it. That is where it gets corrected, and where it stays current after the post stops being news.
